Tre Garrett is an up and coming, award winning director and writer. He is currently a Show Director for Walt Disney Entertainment and a free lance stage and screen director. He is a two time recipient of the N.A.A.C.P Act- So Gold Medal and has received two National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts awards. He is a graduate of the prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and holds a BFA in Directing from the North Carolina School of the Arts (Conservatory) and an MFA in Directing from the Academy of Art University. As a director, Mr. Garrett is a Eugene O’Neill Playwright's Conference Directing fellow, Society of Stage Directors and Choreographer’s John Gielgud Directing Fellow and Kenan Institute for the Arts Directing Fellow. Mr. Garrett was is the 2005 Director in Residence for the John F. Kennedy Center and the 2009 Culley Guest Artist Grant recipient.
Mr. Garrett currently lives in Los Angeles California and has assistant directed with directors such as Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan (Julius Caesar on Broadway starring Denzel Washington) Tony Award winner Leonard Foglia (On Golden Pond, starring James Earl Jones and Leslie Uggams), director/choreographer Debbie Allen (Dancing In The Wings) Ricardo Kahn (Color Me Dark) a Kennedy Center national tour. Michele Shay (Blues for and Alabama Sky), John Dillon (Ramayana), Seret Scott (Deeds),Gerald Freedman (Enemy of the People & Waiting for Godot), Benny Sato Ambush (Journey’s End), Jennifer Nelson (Two Trains Running ) Claude Purdy (The Piano Lesson ) Mark Southers (Boppin’ with the Ancestors & A Soldier's Play) Dr.Vernell A. Lillie (Ashes to Africa ) Je'carius Johnson (Friends and Lovers)- the national tour) and Charles Randolph Wright (Cuttin' Up).
Mr. Garrett has most recently directed, The Love You Save, Wake Up, Scrollers, Love Is..., Mean Mr. Green, A Piece of Time, Blues For An Alabama Sky, Muscle Man at the Movies, The Opera of Emmett Till, for the Trilogy opera Company, Art Tatum/ Piano Starts Here at the Legendary Apollo Theatre, Summer's End for the Women's Playwrights Initiative, Draft Day for the African Continuum Theatre Company, Hambone for Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre (which received three AACTA ONYX awards) Breathe and About Lady at the Kennedy Center, King Christina at 13th street theatre (winner of the New Works merit award), Ma Rainey's Black Bottom for the August in February series, the second leg of Men Cry in the Dark national tour, the Young Playwrights Tour and An Evening of Short Plays for the New York Working Theatre.
